I went down to Tomatin to meet Steve Smirthwaite, a mapmaker based in Nairn who has been producing maps designed for mountain bikers of areas including Strathspey, Moray, Deeside and the Cairngorms.
We headed out on the bikes for a short ride to the bucket bridge over the River Findhorn – where we spent some time chatting about bikes, maps and all things outdoors.

11 years ago he and I starting chatting about his maps wheel he was flying around the world in his day job and I was working in Arizona. Long story short, he sent me a beta of his Cairngorms Carousel maps.
Two friends and I started the route in Pitlochry and met Steve in a pub later that day in Kingussie to say hi in person and talk a bit about the rest of the route. After we finished I sent Steve my gps tracks from our journey. Now that I live in Europe I’m keen to take another lap. Thanks Steve!
