I managed to sneak in a nice bike ride last night, which reminded me (again) just what a fantastic part of the world I live in. Within 25 minutes of leaving home I was approaching Dores looking down over the length of Loch Ness on a beautiful clear evening.

People travel here from all across the world to see this sight, and it’s well worth it, but it’s right here on our doorstep!

It looks like work has started on the Inverness-Dores cycle route that will make up part of NCN R78, as well.

From Dores I headed up the steep hill on the B862 then headed left towards the Loch Ruthven Nature Reserve, across the causeway across Loch Duntelchaig. I was following the Cycle 10 out of my book, one of my favourite local rides and perfect for a summer evening (although it’s only spring and it did manage to snow last night while I was out!).

Loch Ruthven is beautiful and the roads here are very quiet. There were new lambs and calves everywhere and I saw lots of roe deer too.

I headed back to Inverness via Dunlichity then over Bunachton and down to Essich – getting caught in the snow on the way.

A fine way to spend a Friday evening!
