Some photos and a snippet of video from our two-day tour to Durness on the bikes recently. We had mixed weather, generally showery but with some really bright, sunny spells. Fantastic roads, great views, almost got blown off the cliffs camping at Durness! Great fun!
Hi John. Lairg to Durness, I would say, is no more difficult than the Western Isles (though I had a torrid time on the Western Isles with 50mph winds and a broken wheel, so my memory of it is somewhat tainted!). We managed that section in one day of around 60-65 miles, so that should be two days at your suggested pace. Durness down to Ullapool looks okay too – I’m not too familiar with Laxford Bridge down to Loch Assynt, but have cycled the rest of that route on various rides. As long as you avoid the horrendously hilly back road to Lochinver and just stick to the main routes I think it would be no more difficult, though perhaps a little hillier than the Western Isles! Hope you enjoy the trip.
Hi, last year two of os cycled the 9 islands of the western isles in atrocious weather!, however £2750 was raised for yorkhill children’s charity so it was worth it. We are considering another cycle this year going from Lairg to Durness to Ullupool taking 5 or 6 days. Question is , how difficult is it compared to the 155 miles of the western isles. I am 69 and my pal is 65 and we consider around 30/35 miles a day to be ok. Any helpfull info would be most welcome
