I had been working on this route in my head for a couple of years, linking together bits of off-road I had done to create a flowing route through the Highlands from Inverness on the east coast to Ullapool on the west.
Having contemplated and backed out of a one-day epic last summer, this year I headed out with Jim Sutherland – of nineonesixguiding – on a two-day bikepacking expedition with an overnight stop in one of Scotland’s most remote bothies.
